Alabama Power Foundation donates to Leadership in Social Justice and Perseverance Scholarship

The Alabama Power Foundation has made a donation to the 澳门二四六天天彩鈥檚 Leadership in Social Justice and Perseverance Scholarship. This gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar through the Mitchell Moulton Scholarship Initiative at USA. 

The Alabama Power Foundation was formed in 1989 with donations from Alabama Power shareholders. The foundation focuses on educational advancement, civic and community development, arts and cultural enrichment, health and human services and environmental stewardship.  

鈥淭he Alabama Power Foundation is proud to partner with the 澳门二四六天天彩, 100 Black Men of Mobile and other donors in this important scholarship effort,鈥 said Tequila Smith, Alabama Power vice president of Charitable Giving and president of the Alabama Power Foundation. 鈥淥ur foundation supports social justice efforts across the state, and we are proud to join others in helping build a strong and diverse student body at 澳门二四六天天彩who are committed to equality and fairness for all. These students make our state and our country a better place.鈥   

The 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile established the Leadership in Social Justice and Perseverance scholarship in 2020, in partnership with the University, as a way to remember all of those who have fallen to systems of oppression and injustice. Scholarships will be awarded to rising seniors who are underrepresented in the student body at South Alabama and who demonstrate leadership, and a commitment to social justice and perseverance characteristics.

The Alabama Power Foundation grant is the largest corporate donation the Social Justice scholarship has received since its inception in 2020. 

鈥淭he Alabama Power Foundation, 澳门二四六天天彩and the 100 know that education is the great equalizer, and receiving a college education is one way for many students to overcome the systems of oppression and structural inequities that many have faced in their lives,鈥 said Dr. Andr茅 Green, associate vice president of academic affairs at South Alabama and president of 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile. 鈥淭his effort will assist in leveling the playing field for many of our students by supporting them to graduation. Significant investments, especially from our leading corporate institutions, will not only change the trajectory of our students鈥 lives, but the community鈥檚 as a whole.鈥

Including donations from additional corporations including Hancock Whitney Bank, AT&T Foundation, Regions Bank and many individuals, more than $137,000 has been raised for the Leadership in Social Justice and Perseverance scholarship, totaling $274,000 with Mitchell Moulton Scholarship Initiative matching funds.
